Abstract

ABSTRACT

The increasing global uncertainty driven by geopolitical dynamics and macroeconomic fluctuations has placed significant pressure on the stability of the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate and the performance of the domestic manufacturing industry. This study aims to analyze the adaptation strategies employed by the domestic manufacturing industry in response to rupiah exchange rate fluctuations and global geopolitical uncertainty, as well as to identify the factors influencing the effectiveness of these strategies. This study employs a qualitative approach using a systematic literature review and secondary data analysis based on reports from Bank Indonesia, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Statistics Indonesia (BPS), and recent scientific articles published between 2020 and 2026. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that: (1) fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate, which reached a low of IDR 18,045 per USD in June 2026, representing a 6.63% year-to-date depreciation, significantly affected raw material import costs, foreign currency debt burdens, and export competitiveness; (2) global geopolitical uncertainties, including the Russia–Ukraine conflict, the US–China trade war, and tensions in the Middle East, affected the manufacturing industry through supply chain disruptions, rising energy prices, and changes in investor sentiment; and (3) the dominant adaptation strategies included natural hedging through currency diversification, financial hedging using derivative instruments, substitution of imported raw materials with locally sourced products, production cost efficiency, and strengthening export orientation toward non-traditional markets. This study concludes that the success of manufacturing industry adaptation depends heavily on a combination of internal corporate policies and coordinated macroeconomic policy support from the government and Bank Indonesia. The study highlights the importance of strengthening manufacturing sector resilience through structural reforms, the development of import-substitution industries, and diversification of trading partners to reduce dependence on the US dollar and traditional markets.
